Chevy’s 327 – the Mouse that Roared

The Chevrolet performance engine story has to start in 1955 with the release of the now universally famous small block. Debuting at 265 cubic inches, it didn’t take long for the tuning to begin. The Power Pack option became available in 1956, and in ‘57 the first of the famous 283 Fuel Injected models arrived.

Small block development really took flight in 1962 with the release of the legendary 327. Chevy increased the bore size to 4.00” on the new package, and when combined with the 3.25” stroke came up with the new displacement. The new mouse was offered in three forms initially – the most common of which were the 250- and 300-horse examples with hydraulic cams and four-barrel carburetion.

The big news, though, was the 327 destined to be the top engine offering in the Corvette. This engine had an 11.25:1 compression ratio, big-valve heads (1.94” intake, 1.50” exhaust) and a solid-lifter camshaft, and was of course topped off with the exotic Rochester mechanical fuel-injection first seen in ’57. The top-shelf Corvette fuelie 327 was rated at a stout 360 horsepower.

1964 brought even more refinement to the fuel injected 327. Larger valves (2.02” intake, 1.60” exhaust) and a bigger mechanical camshaft (.485” int/exh lift, 346° int/exh duration) resulted in an extremely healthy 375 horsepower rating. Produced in 1964-65, this engine was available only in the Corvette.

By 1966, the new Mark IV big block assumed the role of top performance powerplant at Chevrolet. This didn’t mean, however, that hot-rod small blocks would fall by the wayside. A new 350-horse 327, known by Chevy fans as L-79 (its RPO code), was released for duty in Corvettes, Chevelles and Chevy IIs. Although not quite as powerful (at least on paper) as the 375-horse fuelie engine of previous years, the wider applications meant many more were on the streets, which makes the L-79 among the most popular of the ‘60s small blocks. With an 11:1 compression ratio, 2.02”/1.60” valves, a hydraulic camshaft measuring .447” int/exh lift, 342° int/exh duration, and a high-rise aluminum intake topped by a Holley 4-bbl, this engine exemplifies the type of performance small block a countless number of enthusiasts have built over the years.

Although the 327 continued to be used through 1969, most of the performance small-block work was done on the Z/28-only 302 and the new-in-’67 350-inch engines. But a lot of the legendary small-block Chevy’s success can be attributed to the hot little 327. After all, we’re still talking about it almost a half-century after its debut!

Buick 455 Stage 1 Stage 2

Occasionally we will run a feature on the engines that powered the muscle car era. These articles may focus on a specific power plant, or sometimes a family of engines. Since it’s a universal truth that muscle car engines are some of mankind’s most noteworthy inventions, we think you’ll dig the series.

First up – Buick 455 Stage 1 and Stage 2:

The folks from Flint didn’t disappoint when it came to performance, although they were a little behind the curve as far as timing was concerned. Their Gran Sport line of cars were on the fringe of the muscle car movement through the middle ‘60s. In 1969, Buick began to get serious with the release of the first Stage I engine package on the GS 400. The ‘69 Stage I featured a healthier camshaft, a 4-bbl Quadrajet with revised calibration and bigger dual exhaust system. This added up to 345 horsepower and 440 lb.-ft. of torque for the 400 cubic inch engine, only 5 hp more than the standard GS 400 mill.

The big news from Buick, though, was the 1970 455 Stage I. The new-for-’70 engine sported a 4.31” bore and 3.90” stroke, but the real differences were found in the camshaft and heads. The camshaft featured .490” lift intake and exhaust, with 316° intake duration and a whopping 340° exhaust duration. The heads received bigger valves; 2.12” intake, 1.755” exhaust, and the ports were worked to increase flow. The compression ratio jumped to 10.5:1, requiring premium fuel to feed the monster. And what a monster it was -- 360 horsepower and a stump-pulling 510 lbs.-ft. of torque. Even in the heavy GS 455 A-body (3800+ pounds), the Stage I provided enough grunt to haul the car through the quarter-mile in the high-13 to low-14 second range straight out of the box. When the Stage I 455 was stuffed between the fenders of the radically styled GSX, Buick’s somewhat uptight image disappeared in a cloud of bright color and tire smoke.

Stage I was only the beginning, however. For more serious performance, Buick developed the appropriately named Stage II package. The components that made up the Stage II package were available over-the-counter only, which means no production cars were built with these items. The heart of the system was the revised camshaft. At .455” intake and .480” exhaust, the lift figures weren’t as high as the Stage I cam, but the duration was much longer at 340° intake and 360° exhaust. The Stage II intake was the aluminum Edelbrock B4B, while Buick engineers tapped the 850 cfm Holley for carb duty. The undisputed star of the Stage II system, though, was the cylinder heads. These heads featured redesigned round exhaust ports instead of the standard rectangular versions. The intake ports were a little different from standard Stage I fare, but the new heads were said to be good for 50 extra horsepower on an otherwise stock engine. Special Mickey Thompson headers that mated to the new exhaust arrangement rounded out the Stage II package.

The Buick Stage I and Stage II programs certainly put the tri-shield brand in the thick of the muscle car wars. And of course fifteen years or so later they once again made American performance history with the turbocharged V6 series of engines in the Grand Nationals and Regal T-Types. Just when you think Buick has relaxed back into their staid persona, they surprise everyone and build a monster. We can’t wait for their next one.

2009 Foose Bash Wrap Up

YearOne sure throws a great party, regardless of the weather! For the fourth straight year, ace designer and car builder Foose teamed with well-known muscle car parts supplier YearOne to host the Chip Foose Edition Braselton Bash. Best of all, all proceeds from the weekend’s various activities were donated to charity.

A little background on the event: YearOne holds a monthly series of shows/cruise-ins during the spring and summer at their headquarters in Braselton, Georgia. The proceeds from each show, known as the Braselton Bash, benefit various charitable organizations. YearOne founded the Hot Rodders Children’s Charity shortly after the shows began to facilitate their charitable efforts, and the HRCC then passes the funds along to the appropriate charity or organization.

YearOne’s president Kevin King got to know Chip Foose a few years back while participating in various industry functions. Foose has long done work with the Progeria Research Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to finding a cure for the rare and fatal childhood rapid-aging disease Progeria. King approached Foose with a plan to hold a special Foose Edition Braselton Bash, with the proceeds benefiting PRF. The first event was held in 2006.

The event is much more than a simple show and shine. In an effort to increase industry participation and donations, YearOne came up with a special Friday-night Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament held at the home of Milt Robson’s extraordinary car collection. Milt’s facility is much more than a place to show off his cars, it features a fully equipped and functional western-style saloon up stairs where the Poker playing takes place. Industry VIPs from around the country are invited to play in the tournament, with the winner taking home a suitable grand prize for their efforts. Admission into the game is $1000 a head, which is of course donated to the Progeria Research Foundation.

The Bash itself is held on Saturday, and consists of a large, multi-make show along with a special silent auction of various items. The show is made up of two classes – a general show group with a participant-vote best-in-show award, and a special Foose Select Group. The Foose Select Group is limited to 100 cars, and each member gets a picture of their vehicle and themselves with Chip as a souvenir. Additionally, Chip picks his favorite vehicle out of the Select Group with the winner getting a personalized sketch of their vehicle by Foose, and an invitation to dinner with Foose and Kevin King the following evening.

While this year’s event was marred a bit by wet weather, the Foose Edition Braselton Bash still managed to raise just over $110,000 for the Hot Rodders Children’s Charity and the Progeria Research Foundation. The event is quickly becoming a tradition within the industry, with extensive magazine and television coverage helping spread the word.
